This morning, AWD HQ had a visit from a special work experience student, local Kilmarnock and Loudoun MP, Alan Brown.
Alan, who was also a chartered civil engineer in the water industry before he took up his role in politics, paid us a visit to get some hands-on work experience and get to know the team here at AWD.
The day started with a tour round our Hill Street offices, meeting our engineers and learning more about our work across temporary works, access engineering and structural design.
As a recently elected ICE Fellow, Alan discussed some current flagship UK infrastructure projects including HS2, Hinkley Point and the refurbishment of Big Ben in London and the role of SME’s in these works, as well as the challenges facing the engineering industry today.
We then put Alan to work on some of our current projects, showing him the software packages we use to produce our designs including AutoCAD, STRAP analysis software and NDN Membrane. Alan, with his previous engineering knowledge, also put our engineers under the grill with some technical questions.
It was great to welcome Alan to the team for the day, showing great interest in our work, and actively looking for ways to help our business succeed. We look forward to the return leg where Malachy will swap Kilmarnock for Westminster!
